Steve started Howard’s Way in 1988
with a vision of someday passing it on…
Steve started in the construction industry as an apprentice mason paver with Barnsley Council as a young man, as the councils offered good apprenticeship opportunities back then. This was where he learned all his skills in the trade. He then joined the coal mine workforce and during the strikes, he found work in construction again to earn a living for his family. Once the mines eventually closed down in the 1980s, Steve wanted to work for himself so he started his own building & landscaping business.
When his youngest son, Tom came of age, he started helping Steve on jobs but had also started an apprenticeship to be an electrician. He completed his Level 3 BTEC Electrical Engineering & his City & Guilds Electrical Engineering & Infrastructure qualifications and then decided to join his dad full time. They have been working together ever since.
In 2020 Steve had an operation so he was out of action for a while. It was then that Tom took more of an active lead on the business and pushed it into what it is now. We now have a full team of workers, including an apprentice who is currently completing his Level 2 in Groundworks. Tom’s wife, Keeley takes care of all the invoicing, payroll and administration work for the business.
